I know you don't really care about this, but The Abyss is one of my favorite movies. After working on a bunch of Windows 95 themes, using stuff I downloaded off the internet, I realized that I had run across NOTHING on The Abyss! I thought about it for a while, and set out to make one (with the help of my director's cut laser disk boxed set).
I ended up with three. Three pretty-much all different themes.
I spent a great deal of time scanning images, trimming a 30-minute 'best-of quotes' tape I made down to the pithy quotes I could use in a theme, and making icons and cursors in order to get this to be three themes that _I_ would really enjoy, and which would evoke the movie to the greatest degree possible. I think that these are some of the best themes I've made (and I've made a BUNCH!)
To Install:
Unzip to your Themes directory (using 'recurse subdirectories'). The three "Abyss-<x>.Theme" files should end up in the Themes directory itself, and all other files should unzip into an "Abyss" subdirectory of your Themes directory.
If you know how to safely replace start-up and shut-down screens (Logo.SYS files), you can also do that if you want. The "monash.edu.au" ftp address below has a link explaining how to do this, if you do not know how but want to try these.
If your screen is set for LESS than 1024 x 768, it shouldn't be a problem, as the themes are set for "stretch wallpaper to fit" and so will actually 'crunch wallpaper to fit'. However, you will have to manually change the Water Tentacle screen saver to something smaller (or it probably won't move). Ideal settings for 1024 x 768 are "Size: 600", "Speed: 3", and "Index of Refraction: 1.50".
(By the way: if you get tired of Coffey's High Pressure Nervous Syndrome-induced 'playing with the chain' noises, you can remove them via: My Computer / Control Panel / Sounds while the particular theme is active. If you don't want them back later, resave the theme once they are no longer listed. If you _might_ want them back, save the Abyss theme without the chain noises with a different name (maybe "Abyss-A-No-C" or something.) (FYI: There are FOUR different chain noises, each linked to particular sets of up/down open/close functions, so its not particularly easy to just 'drop them back in'.)
If you're wondering just how I got the color schemes for each to match the themes so well, check out another downloadable theme-file: "COLORIZE.ZIP" from http:/ftp.monash.edu.au//pub/win95.themes/. It is something else I'm proud of that I've done with/for themes, and will likely help you with any themes you decide to make. (Frankly, I'm most pleased with the 'rusty paint job' color scheme for the 'Tentacle' theme (Abyss-C).)
Everything in here is copyright 1993 Fox Video/James Cameron.
At NO TIME are any charges to be made for access to any of these themes or their parts. To do so is neither moral (from the standpoint of the work that I put into them), nor is it legal (as you would be charging for something for which Fox Video owns the copyrights).
Though I have not licensed any of this, and therefore have no legal say in how its distributed, I have put a LOT of work into the transformation of these things into these themes. I would prefer if everything remained together, and/or if you distribute this in any fashion, I would appreciate being given credit for my part in the 'creation' of this stuff for computer use. Thank you.
If you get the opportunity, please let me know what you think of this/these.
